Abstract

The goal of this work is to develop a generic prototype of a flood-forecasting system that is transferable to locations around the Midwest. The system is to provide monitoring and forecasting flood potential at critical infrastructure points, such as bridges, where streamflow gauges are not available. The efforts will focus on creating online tools to communicate hydrologic model results and to develop evaluation metrics that facilitate the implementation/evaluation of the forecasting system in the four states that support MATC. In addition, the research team will begin testing the use of data-assimilation techniques that will reduce the difference between model estimates and observations at USGS stream gauge locations. We expect that the combination of flexible web tools and flexible model parameterization techniques will allow us to provide a prototype framework for efficient and realistic technology transfer to the DOTs sponsoring our work.
