Abstract There is a need to increase the number of students interested in transportation. This grant will provide support to the KU ITE Student Chapter with direct support to plan
and host the Midwestern and Great Lakes Districts Student Leadership Summit to be held in Fall 2020. Further, this grant will provide support for the KU ITE Student Chapter's regular annual activities including travel to the Midwestern district meeting and support for monthly chapter meetings. Additionally, this grant will provide direct funding to the School of Engineer’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to attract and retain talented minority students in engineering.
Objective The KU ITE Student Chapter has been awarded the opportunity to host the Midwestern and Great Lakes Districts Student Leadership Summit to be held in Fall 2020. It is anticipated that 200 students will come from across the Midwest and Great Lakes districts to attend. This grant will provide support for this summit by providing funds to defray the costs of hotels for participants, catered meals during, t-shirts for participants, and supplies for activities.
Support of recruitment and retention efforts of underrepresented minorities through the School of Engineering’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will also be supported through this grant.. Examples of previous funding uses include bringing alumni back to campus for special presentations with current students, networking events with minority-serving institutions to build stronger ties with the University of Kansas, and sending students to the MATC Scholars Program.

Impacts/Benefits It is expected that this grant will further interest in transportation engineering, and closely related fields in civil engineering through support of the Student Leadership Summit. Additionally, this grant supports recruitment and retention of talented underrepresented minorities in engineering through its support of the School of Engineering’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
